Baltimore Company Brings Back House Calls With New Technology
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- House calls just got a lot more high-tech thanks to a Baltimore company.
Andrea Fujii explains how a new invention will be helping thousands of people across the country.
Home medical visits have jumped into the 21st century with "e-house calls."
"I think they're going to be amazed. 'Oh, you got a computer. You bring a computer in your home? Oh, my goodness,'" said Marilyn Williams, nurse practitioner.
Baltimore-based XLHealth designed the one-of-a-kind technology that is now used for house calls in six states, including more than 300 patients in Maryland.
Nurse practitioners are now learning how to use it, eliminating hours of paperwork that slow down patient care.
"With the electronic tablet that information is more efficient and comes to us much sooner," said Barbara Duffy, XLHealth.
The majority of clients are homebound seniors on Medicare and many welcome nurse visits.
"We will have a chance to spend more time interacting with the clients," said Williams.
The design promotes a good bedside manner. The nurse can keep eye contact with the patient while writing vital information.
Once healthcare laws take effect, XLHealth expects more Medicare patients nationwide to sign up, boosting Baltimore's economy.
"That requires more practitioners, more support here in Baltimore to support our house calls program," said Duffy.
