Honda owners targeted in airbag theft spree across Anne Arundel County

Police in Anne Arundel County say a spree of airbag thefts has hit the county, with the latest incidents reported in Glen Burnie, Odenton and Crofton.

Officers responded overnight Monday to multiple reports of airbag thefts in the Americana Circle area of Glen Burnie. Police also confirmed seven additional airbag thefts in the Piney Orchard Parkway area of Odenton, as well as other incidents in Crofton.

All of the thefts involved Honda vehicles, police said.

Hannah Swain said four vehicles were targeted at her Odenton apartment complex. She said she walked out to her vehicle Monday and found the window shattered and the airbag missing.

Swain said it will cost her about $500 to repair her Honda CR-V.

"I thought I was kind of in one of the safest areas, so not great," Swain said. "Yeah, it just sucks that it's all Hondas and that's my car, and I love my car."

Police said most of the incidents involved suspects forcing their way into the vehicles. Officers searched the affected areas, but no suspects were located.

Police reiterate protective measures

Last month, the Anne Arundel County Police Department issued a warning to residents about a rise in airbag thefts and urged them to take steps to protect their vehicles.

Police recommend parking in garages or well-lit areas, keeping doors locked and windows closed, and adding alarm equipment that can detect break-ins.

Vehicle owners are also advised not to leave valuables or charging cables inside their cars. Police said residents should report suspicious activity but avoid confronting anyone directly.

Police also urge people with home or business security cameras to review and save recordings of suspicious people or vehicles in areas where thefts have occurred.

Suspicious activity can be reported through the department's non-emergency number at 410-222-8610.

Anne Arundel County police are also handing out free wheel locks to county residents at all police districts.
