Amtrak Upgrades On Board Wi-Fi, Free High-Speed Internet For Travelers

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Amtrak is working to make  your commute easier by upgrading their Wi-Fi capabilities .

Tracey Leong has more.

Amtrak is improving their services for travelers up and down the East Coast by upgrading their on board AmtrakConnect Wi-Fi network.

First installed in 2010, the system is now outdated and unreliable.

"We recognize that, committed to enhancing the service because customers care about being connected while traveling," said Amtrak senior director Lenetta McCampbell.

It's good news for travelers who rely heavily on their wireless devices while traveling.

Passengers no longer need to worry about burning through their data.

Free high speed Wi-Fi on board is the first phase in the upgrade. The second phase is bringing the upgraded service to their stations.

"Baltimore Penn Station is one of two in the country that has been selected for the pilot build out of the wireless network, we are going to Wi-Fi enable the entire station including the platform," said McCampbell.

While this upgraded service does not give users access to stream music or movies AmtrakConnect does allow passengers to check train schedules social media and stay up to date on current events.

The Wi-Fi is just the latest perk for using Amtrak, they also have a generous baggage policy and new pet program.

The Amtrak wireless upgrade will be implemented in phases--and is expected to be complete in four years.
