4 Rabid Bats Found In Downtown Frederick Since August

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Officials say another rabid bat has been found in Frederick.

The Frederick News-Post reports this is the fourth rabid bat found in the city since August. The Frederick County Health Department says all four bats were found within a three-quarter-mile radius.

Officials are encouraging residents who have come in contact with a bat since March to seek treatment. Officials say the fatal disease is 100 percent preventable when treated properly.

The health department, through Frederick Memorial Hospital, offers post-exposure treatment for people who have come in contact with a known or suspected rabid animal.

Officials say pets that may have been exposed to the virus may need a booster shot and quarantine.

Health officials encourage people to avoid contact with wild animals to prevent rabies.
