23-year-old arrested in shooting death of 12-year-old near Baltimore youth football game
A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of 12-year-old Khloe Ishway, who was shot near a youth football game Saturday at Leon Day Park in West Baltimore.
Tyree Reynolds is facing charges including murder, attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and other offenses.
Ishway and four other people were shot during the incident. Khloe was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say parking dispute led to deadly shooting
Police believe the shooting stemmed from an argument over a parking spot between two men, with Khloe caught in the crossfire.
A 25-year-old woman, a 28-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were also injured.
"Khloe was just 12 years old," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Police Commissioner Richard Worley said in a joint statement. "She should have a whole life ahead of her: school, a career, time spent with family and friends. Instead, she was killed because two adult men resorted to deadly violence to resolve an argument over a parking spot."
"Our hearts remain with Khloe's mother, her family and friends, and our entire community, and we are committed to getting justice on their behalf," they said.
Scott called the shooting "one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my life" on Saturday.
"This arrest represents an important step toward accountability for Khloe and her family, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to this investigation," Scott and Worley said.
"Khloe's tragic death is a painful reminder of the responsibility we all share to protect our children and keep our communities safe. Young people and families should never have to fear becoming victims in places where they should feel safe."
Community gathers to honor Khloe
On Monday, hundreds of people walked to Leon Day Park for a peace walk in support of Khloe and her family and to call for an end to gun violence.
Youth football players wore their jerseys in Khloe's honor as the crowd walked, chanted and called for justice.
"Just remember her as a person, a loving person, a good family member, good sister, good cousin, good friend," Khloe's mother, Kristin Reese, said. "I just want everyone to remember her."
A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Tuesday to remember Khloe.
"Khloe, I love you and I miss you. And you forever 12. You forever my baby," Reese told CBS News Baltimore on Sunday. "You will forever live through me, and I know she's in a good place and she's happy, and that's what matters."
