2 Frostburg State Students Trapped In Fatal Fire
FROSTBURG, Md. (WJZ)--Two Maryland families are left stunned and heartbroken after two college students were killed in a fire. The fire broke out overnight in Allegany County. Both victims were students at Frostburg State University.
Kelly McPherson has more.
Friday was supposed to be a birthday celebration. Instead, friends are mourning the death of the birthday day girl and her boyfriend.
"You wake up one day and you find out that, you know, she's gone," said a friend of the female victim.
Alyssa Salazar and fellow Frostburg State University student Evan Kullberg were in a second floor apartment above a pizza shop when a fire started.
Salazar had called 911 twice to say they were trapped.
"What took so long? 15 minutes. 'Hey I need the fire department; I'm about to die.' 15 minutes later, 'I'm really going to die here,' and they're right down the street," said a Frostburg State student.
"That literally makes me want to rip out my heart; it just kills me," said a friend of Salazar.
As for the cause, investigators are looking into an outdoor stove and electrical wiring.
Salazar, an elementary education major, is from Annapolis and graduated from Broadneck High School in 2008. She was on the honor roll. Her family still lives in the area, but did not want to go on camera.
"It just makes me laugh to think about her because she would just walk in the room and just make everyone laugh and happy," said Salazar's friend.
Salazar's last Facebook entry read: "I wanna be forever young."
A business major, Evan co-owned the pizza shop on top of going to school fulltime and volunteering with the Maryland National Guard.
Ten people escaped the fire; Salazar and Kullberg were the only two who died.
An official campus vigil will be held Sunday.
