Henry County unveils $55 million aquatic center and water park set to open this summer

A major new attraction is taking shape south of Atlanta, as Henry County leaders preview a $55 million aquatic center and water park expected to open in early June.

The facility, located at 1177 Henry Parkway Connector in McDonough, is being funded largely through SPLOST V and is designed to serve both recreational visitors and competitive swimmers.

County officials say construction is entering its final stages, with crews currently plastering the pools and preparing to begin filling them with water in the coming days.

A mix of recreation and competition

The new aquatic center will include both an outdoor water park and an indoor competitive swimming facility — a combination leaders say will make it a regional destination.

Outside, visitors can expect a range of attractions, including:

  • A 30-foot slide tower with four large slides
  • A lazy river
  • A surf-style wave rider simulator
  • A zero-entry kiddie pool with a large water bucket feature
  • A rooftop patio and bar
  • Space for food truck concessions

Inside, the facility is designed with competitive swimming in mind, featuring:

  • A 50-meter, temperature-controlled Olympic-size pool
  • Stadium-style seating for up to 800 spectators
  • A separate 25-yard lap pool

Officials say the indoor space is built to host swim meets and support athletes at all levels.

"For any aspiring Olympic athletes or just those who are great swimmers, this will be a fantastic facility for them," one official said during a preview of the site.

Economic and community impact

Leaders say the project is about more than just entertainment — it's also expected to boost local tourism and provide new opportunities for youth sports and community programming.

The addition of competitive facilities could position Henry County to host regional swim meets, bringing visitors and economic activity to the area.

At the same time, the outdoor water park is designed to offer families a new summer destination, with amenities that rival larger regional attractions.

Opening timeline

County officials say the aquatic center remains on track for a grand opening in early June, just in time for peak summer season.

Once open, the facility is expected to serve as both a community hub and a draw for visitors across metro Atlanta and beyond.
