Kyle Ames is picking up the pieces of his life after the Guadalupe River came crashing into his home in Ingram, Texas, early Friday morning. I just hear it off in the distance, there's water in the house. Daddy, there's water in the house.

The kids woke you up? Yeah, and I stepped down, and it's above my knee. Oh my gosh. And, I mean, it took me a minute to process.

Ames, a father of two boys, says when he stepped out of bed, the water was already at his knees. Less than 10 minutes later, it was up to his waist. They were thinking, Daddy, are we going to die? Did they say that? Yeah, absolutely. They said that? Oh yeah. I mean, this is the water line. With the water quickly rising to their necks, his girlfriend, Hannah, and mother, Cindy, said they had to get to the roof, and only Kyle could lift them all up there. I was like, I'm going to go underneath. And she put her legs or feet on my shoulder, and I lifted her up, and Hannah helped her get the rest of the way up there. I mean, I can't even-- it just happened so quick, and it was just instinct.

Their dog, [? Remy, ?] was still in the water. Ames had to dive under water to get to him. If you're like me, a dog is part of your family. Of course. And I couldn't sit there up on the roof thinking that she's drowning in here. Is your dad a hero? Yes. He sacrificed himself to help someone. That's what the Ames family does, bro.

Even though Ames's home is 40 feet above the river, everything in his house was destroyed. Ames's girlfriend, Hannah. The hardest part is probably seeing all of your stuff go away, you know? Everything that they grew up with is gone.

Ames and his mother say they are trying to salvage what they can but admit they have survivor's guilt. What do you say to the families who didn't make it, have people who didn't make it? I'm so sorry for your loss, and it's not fair to lose people you love like this. But my heart is with you guys. I mean, and. God bless. Yeah that's all you can say, really. Sorry for the loss, and it's not their fault. That's an amazing story from that family, though. I love the little brother sitting next to each other. "That's what the Ames family is all about, bro."

That's what we do, save lives and sacrifice ourselves. Stories like that, though, that we need to hear throughout all of this devastation. Absolutely.
