It's hilarious.

GAYLE KING:
00:01:41

And it's full of heart. That's the thing that got me. Is that what it's like in your house, really? No. It's a fictionalized version. It's heightened. It's a little more compact. Sure, there's been moments that are wild and crazy and fun like that but not as much. And my girls were not allowed to curse until they were 16.

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:01:59

16. Leanne's old school. Leanne-

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:02:02

Your wife. We didn't spank. But there was the fear of it. The fear, which is enough, usually to get-- Which is more effective. Yes, very effective. So wait, Bert, one of the things that I noticed is that you're actually a really good actor in this scene. Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no. Hold on. Hold on. Let me tell you a story. So there's this scene in episode 2, where I talk to the father about one of the main plot structures. You know the scene I'm talking about, out by the pool.

GAYLE KING:
00:02:23

Yes. And it's just a listening scene. That's all I have to do is listen. I'm not a listener. As you can tell in this interview, I'm not a listener. And I hear Video Village breaking up laughing in the middle of the scene, and I go, what's going on? Am I doing something wrong? And they're like, shut up. Keep going. I get done, and I looked at my wife, who's a producer on it, and I go, baby, what happened? And she goes, honey, you are such not a listener that watching you listen is hysterical. She goes, it's so forced. You're like--

GAYLE KING:
00:02:49

It's your expressions.

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:02:50

But that's what I was going to say.

GAYLE KING:
00:02:51

It's your expressions. Because in that scene that we just showed, when you're like, maybe he just likes me, and you're like-- and I can totally tell what's going on in your brain. And it's like-- because I contrast that with the comics who did shows back in the '90s and '90s, where they weren't that great of an actor, but the material was funny. Here, the material is funny, and you're really good.

GAYLE KING:
00:03:11

Yes. And I would argue that all the actors are really hysterical, so I don't have to be the funniest person in every scene, like Lilou, Ava, those two young ladies destroy. They're great. And then our standout stars, the three bad dads, hysterical, the evil mom, amazing. The evil mom.

BERT KREISCHER:
00:03:27

My wife, Arden Myrin, is incredible. And my dad loves these outfit choices.

GAYLE KING:
00:03:34

Yes, your outfit choices-- let's talk about that. Let's talk about that.

BERT KREISCHER:
00:03:37

It was--

GAYLE KING:
00:03:38

Your fashion sense and your wardrobe, but I am-- I'm fascinated that you were so comfortable in your own skin. Tell me how you were able to do that. I think I'm just dumb enough to not know what the world sees. So when we-- I was telling you backstage, when we did drop-off, they had an outfit picked out, and I said, that's not what I would wear. So I put what I would wear, short-- I would love short running shorts because I like to run-- I know-- and then flip-flops-- Yes. --and then-- I like to run. --and then a sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off. And I was like, that's what I look like. You don't see what you look like to the world. You just go, I look good. I look good. My arms look good. My legs look good. I'm tan. And then I watched it in a screening, and I went, I look ridiculous. And they're like, we tried to tell you that. No. And I was like, but that's what I look like. I'm shirtless in every scene with my daughters. And I was like, that's how I am around the House. Dads are shirtless. I think dads-- But it's so much humanity in the show. That's the thing. Wait till you guys see it because there's a beginning, a middle, and an end. And it so redeems itself in terms of the heart that you have, the love you have for the family. Is there anything that your family says, Dad, that's off limits, you cannot do that, your wife or your-- They tried to kill the show.

GAYLE KING:
00:04:43

Did they?

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:04:43

Your daughters, right? My daughters tried to kill the show. They're like, nah, it's out. We're not doing it. I went, hold on. You don't kill it. In the presentation. You wait until we get an order, then kill it. And so we did the presentation. We showed it to them. And they did not want their names used, their likeness--

GAYLE KING:
00:04:59

Their real names, yeah. Their real names. And then they watched it. And that scene where Lilou gives me the speech at the end of the table, and when you fight a bull--

GAYLE KING:
00:05:07

I know. Both of them are teared up, and they're like, this is amazing. You got to do this. And I was like, for real? And they're like, Dad, we love it. And they came to the set. Ila came to set and was like, this is funny, Dad.

GAYLE KING:
00:05:17

It is. Yeah.

GAYLE KING:
00:05:19

It is funny.

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:05:19

It really is. And what else is funny is I think we have that picture, guys, of-- yeah, look.

BERT KREISCHER:
00:05:25

Oh my god.

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:05:26

Is this not the--

BERT KREISCHER:
00:05:28

Frame this. I want this framed and signed. No. No, I actually walked in, so inappropriate. Can I touch your tummy? Gayle King to human resources. I didn't. Leanne, I didn't. But I was so shocked when I walked in, and he's standing there in full glory. Bert, it's so great to have you. Thank you very much. You can watch Free Burt--

GAYLE KING:
00:05:47

Who got that picture?

VLAD DUTHIERS:
00:05:48

--this Thursday on Netflix.

GAYLE KING:

Who got that picture?
