New robotaxi safety study finds Waymo crashes 68% less than people
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety compared crash rates in Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Austin from 2021 through 2024. In every city except Austin, Waymo came out ahead and they were involved in 85% fewer single-car accidents.
But researchers warn the comparison isn't perfect, because robotaxis are required to report incidents that people are not.
