Meteor breaks apart over Houston

Texans reported bright flashes and a loud boom near Houston this evening, and officials now believe a meteor was responsible. NASA confirms a meteor entered the atmosphere around 4:40 p.m., first becoming visible about 40 miles northwest of the city. Traveling roughly 35,000 miles per hour, it broke apart overhead, creating the flashes and sound residents reported. Fire crews in nearby communities responded after people called in reports of an explosion.
