High court bars damages for Louisiana inmate in dreadlocks dispute
The Supreme Court issued several opinions on Tuesday, with religion taking center stage. The court ruled 6-3 that a former Louisiana inmate cannot sue prison officials who shaved his dreadlocks. Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, said that while the man’s religious beliefs were violated, the federal statute designed to protect inmates’ rights does not allow lawsuits for monetary damages.
