Woman Treads Water For Hours Awaiting Rescue
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A young woman tread water for two hours in Lake Ray Hubbard on the Fourth of July as she waited for rescuers. Kirstyn Blackwood was was on a party boat with friends when it happened. The 20-year-old decided to go for a swim... but her friends took off in the boat, not realizing she was still in the water.
While traveling between Party Cove and Chandler's Landing, Blackwood's friends on the boat finally noticed she was missing.
Dallas Fire-Rescue's Water Rescue Team responded, using sonar and infrared technology in their search. As more and more time passed however, first responders said they were almost certain they would recover a body.
Suddenly, firefighters heard the Blackwood screaming in the distance, found her and pulled her to safety.
"She was so scared. That was what first came out of her mouth," according to Lt. Matt Leatherwood of Dallas Fire-Rescue. "She was relieved and happy to be out of the water."
Blackwood was taken to a local hospital where she received seven stitches, but is expected to fully recover from her exhausting ordeal.
