Wendy Davis Joins PUC Bashing Over Market Vote
AUSTIN (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis is joining bipartisan opposition against a possible restructuring of the Texas electricity market.
The Fort Worth state senator said Thursday that state energy regulators are overstepping their authority by supporting giving power companies subsidies to build more plants in Texas.
Republicans and Democrats on a Senate committee last week blasted the Public Utility Commission over an October vote that opened the door to what's called a capacity market.
Power companies currently only make money when electricity is sold. Capacity payments give additional money for keeping mandated reserve power, which supporters say would guard against blackouts and incentive construction of new plants.
Lawmakers say it would lead to higher electric bills without any guarantee the lights will stay on.
