Two DISD Schools Must Restructure After Five Years Of Failing Federal Standards
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Two Dallas Independent School District schools will have to undergo mandated changes, due to student performance deficiencies.
Hillcrest High School and Cary Middle School have failed to meet federal academic standards in math and reading for five straight years. As a result, parents and the public get a chance to look at ordered restructuring plans for each school.
Although Hillcrest High has a strong advanced placement program, engineering academy and an 80-percent graduation rate, changes are still on the way.
Each school must "restructure" by adding specialists, math coaches, or in the case of Cary, a new campus principal.
District officials say the restructuring order may hide the student progress seen at each school.
"It does signal a red flag, and I can see how it can be perceived that way," says DISD spokesperson, Jon Dahlander. "But there are a number of things taken place over the years to suggest differently. That's not to say everything is great. We can always make improvements."
The school board will hold a public hearing Thursday, where public can weigh in on the restructure plans.
