Tuition Increase & County Tax Hike Funds For DCCCD
DALLAS COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Folks who live in Dallas County will be paying a little more for property taxes next year. The extra funds will help pay for county community colleges.
The Dallas County Community College District board of trustees approved a $20 a year bump in taxes and a $7 per credit increase in tuition.
District administrators say they had no choice.
"We've done everything that we can possibly do to cut budget and now we found ourselves in a situation where we had to look at raising property tax and also raising tuition," DCCCD media relations director Ann Hatch explained.
According to Hatch, it's a matter of simple arithmetic; they've had more resources going out, than money coming in.
"Over the last five years we've seen a 20-percent enrollment increase. At the same time we've had a loss of $23 million in state funding."
Starting in January 2013 DCCCD tuition will be $52 a credit hour for students in-district, which is still among the lowest rates in the state.
The increases should bring in an additional $6.3 million in tuition revenue and $32 million in additional tax revenues.
The DCCCD is the largest undergraduate institution in Texas with some 83,000 credit students and 25,000 continuing education students.
