The Sound Of Red Dirt Country: 95.9 The Ranch

When it comes to radio programming, there are music formats within the main music formats. With country music, a station can drill down and program a variety of music genres: New Country (current artists that top the Billboard charts, with that sometimes divided between Nashville Country and Texas Country), Classic Country (songs from the 60's & 70's), and "Greatest Hits" Country (80's, 90's. and some the "00" decade). There is also Bluegrass and Outlaw/Renegade Country formats.

But there's another one: Red Dirt Country, a format that features young artists between the ages of 16-45, with a gritty sound, and at times a little rock/blues mixed in. The Red Dirt is a geographical reference to the soil found in Texas and Oklahoma, and that's where many of those artists in that genre of music come from.

In our area, KFWR-FM is your station for "The Sound Of Texas." On 95.9 FM, the station was known years ago as KJSA and was located in Mineral Wells but when it was acquired by the current owners, the call letters were changed to KFWR ("Fort Worth Ranch") and the studios moved to Fort Worth. Its signal is much stronger and clearer today due to a recent tower and transmitter move for its 100,000 watt signal. If you ever have been in downtown Fort Worth at Sundance Square, you can see their signage at 3rd and Main Street outside their building (they are currently in another location until later this year when they will be returning to that address). What is fun is seeing the station (and sister station KTFW, 92.1 HANK-FM) from a street side point of view and the personalities on duty while walking down 3rd Street!

The DJ schedule is:

5:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.: Justin Frazell & Charla Corn
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Malone
3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.: Shayne Hollinger
7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.: Ben Ryan

As an example of what you might hear on the station, check out this song from Deryl Dodd as performed on Texas Music Scene:
