DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. hosted a water safety event Saturday at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor for hundreds of Dallas/Fort Worth area youth.
The Swim 1922 Water Safety Event encouraged children to learn how to swim and how to prevent drowning.
Olympian Maritza McClendon, the first African American to make the U.S. Olympic Swim Team and member of Sigma Gamma Rho, presented basic water safety tips and techniques such as floating, kicking and proper underwater breathing.
McClendon also encouraged attendees to know where lifeguard stations are located and to be aware of water depths.
The event also featured a drowning demonstration to show the children how quickly it can occur.
