Serial Rape Suspect Headed Back To Texas
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) – Serial rape suspect Van Dralan Dixson is one step closer to returning to Dallas to face several aggravated sexual assault charges.
Late Thursday morning, the East Baton Rouge District Attorney confirmed that Dixson has signed extradition papers and is waiting to be transported back to Texas.
Earlier that morning, at his arraignment, the 38-year-old was read his rights and reminded that he could fight extradition. Instead, he told the judge via teleconference, "I ain't going to bond out. I'm going to sign something showing that I am Van Dixson, so I can get back to Texas." Dixson is being held on 5 million dollar bond.
No exact time frame for Dixson's return has been set, although a spokesperson for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department says he will not return on Thursday. Dallas County Sheriff's Deputies will head to Louisiana to bring him back to Texas. Officials in Baton Rouge are also waiting for all the proper transfer paperwork to be filed. The extradition process can take up to 10 days.
Wednesday night - Dallas Police Chief David Brown held a lengthy news conference, detailing the investigation, the timeline, and defending how his department notified the community about a serial rapist.
Chief Brown says detectives had difficulty getting some of the victims to talk and police did not want to rush them.
According to the arrest warrant, Dixson was first contacted by police on September 4, after they received a tip. He was interviewed and voluntarily gave a DNA swab sample. His home was searched but no weapon was found. By the time the DNA test results came back, linking him to the rapes, he had skipped town. Police say he tried to throw them off his trail by first going to the Mexican border. Dixson was eventually arrested Tuesday afternoon in Baton Rouge.
According to police, DNA evidence links Dixson to four of the nine reported sexual assaults. Police are awaiting DNA results from two additional cases. Police say during interviews Dixson implicated himself in one of those two remaining cases.
Police have now cleared Alan Mason, who they named as a person of interest in this case earlier this week. In a statement police said, "based on the recent suspect interview, further review of the offenses, additional DNA analysis, offense details obtained from the survivors, and suspect M.O. It is the department's belief that Mr. Mason was not involved in these cases."
