RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas prison officials say 16 offenders and two correctional officers were hospitalized with injuries that weren't life-threatening after the bus they were traveling in crashed in South Texas.

Department of Criminal Justice officials said everyone in the bus was taken to a hospital after the Friday morning wreck near Raymondville. By afternoon, everyone but two offenders had been released from hospitals.

Prison officials say the bus left the road and rolled onto its side after the driver tried to avoid hitting a vehicle that stopped abruptly.

Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Johnny Hernandez says the bus driver was traveling too fast for the slick and foggy conditions when the bus approached a vehicle backup from an earlier wreck. After rolling, the bus struck a pole.
