DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — A woman died after suffering a gunshot wound Friday. Dallas police arrested a man and charged him with unlawful possession of firearms by felon in connection with the shooting.

Dallas police say officers responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 8300 block of R.L. Thornton Freeway on Friday, where the woman was shot. Police say a man dropped her off at the hospital and left. The woman died.

Police say homicide detectives interviewed 30-year-old Donny Joe Copeland regarding the shooting. According to police, Copeland said the woman had a gun at the scene. The gun dropped, causing it to go off, and the bullet hit the woman. After it went off, Copeland placed the gun inside a trash can.

Witnesses saw Copeland put the gun in the trash can, but none of them saw the actual shooting.

Police arrested Copeland and charged him with unlawful possession of firearms by felon.

Police say the incident is documented as an unexplained death, and the woman has yet to be identified.
