HONOLULU (AP) - The United States and Japan will seek to put pain and resentment over the Pearl Harbor attacks behind them when their leaders pay a historic visit to the place where bloodshed drew the U.S. into World War II.

Although Japanese leaders have visited Pearl Harbor before, Abe will be the first to visit the memorial that rests on the hallowed waters above the sunken USS Arizona.

After a formal meeting in the morning, Obama and Abe plan to lay a wreath aboard the USS Arizona Memorial, which is situated above the ship's wreckage and is accessible only by boat. Then they'll go to nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, where both leaders will speak.

For Obama, it's likely his last meeting with a foreign leader before his presidency ends Jan. 20.
