Historic Storm Coming To East Coast

HURRICANE SANDY ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVER

Hurricane Sandy is a massive Category One hurricane with tropical force winds spreading out almost a thousand miles from end to end. It is now the 2nd largest Atlantic hurricane on record. About 60 million people are in the path of the storm.

The low pressure mark is expected fall within a range that ultimately could match the devastating hurricane of 1938.

It is still expected to come onshore Monday night somewhere between Delaware and NYC, likely in southern New Jersey.

Those Tropical Storm force winds with gusts of over 50mph will consume the middle of the Northeast Megalopolis that is Norfolk to Boston, one of the highest populated urban cores in the world. This will create a major power outage.

This is part of the public information statement issued by the New Jersey National Weather Service warning coastal residents to evacuate:

"IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT, THINK ABOUT YOUR LOVED ONES, THINK ABOUT THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WHO WILL BE UNABLE TO REACH YOU WHEN YOU MAKE THE PANICKED PHONE CALL TO BE RESCUED, THINK ABOUT THE RESCUE/RECOVERY TEAMS WHO WILL RESCUE YOU IF YOU ARE INJURED OR RECOVER YOUR REMAINS IF YOU DO NOT SURVIVE."

I still believe that the most devastating part of this storm is what the storm surge could do in Long Island sound and New York harbor. Because of the size and direction of this unprecedented storm surf and historically high waves will pile on top of Astronomical High Tide (there is a full moon tonight). The storm will last so long there could be three high tides with this storm.

The wind damage from this storm will be widespread, Winds at 45mph or above are in purple and cover the northern quarter of the United States:

I expect there to be a record storm surge of over 10 feet at Battery Park. This would flood the NYC subway system. The threat of this historical flooding is why the Mayor of New York has evacuated  ZONE A of the city and shut down the transit system.

Air traffic over the entire country is severely affected from the east coast shutting down to commercial airplanes.

Because leaves are on the trees and tropical force winds will extend out 800 miles when it comes onshore tomorrow night there could be a massive power outage in the 8th largest metropolis corridor in the world.

The heaviest rains (up to 8") will be on the south side of the storm center in Delaware, Virginia and Maryland:

Power outages, damaging surf and monster waves along with large swaths of power outages will create a billion dollar weather disaster.

There will be blizzard like conditions in West Virginia with a very heavy, wet snowfall centered in the mountains of West Virginia down the southern Appalachians  Just like the winds and heavy rain along the coast, this snow will heavily damage every tree that still has its leaves.

They call it Frankenstorm because its an historic merger of a nor'easter and a hurricane.

Follow Garry Seith starting at 4:30, along with CBS This Morning at 7:00 a.m. By mid-day Monday just about everybody along the I-95 corridor will be pinned down by this massive hurricane. The winds won't let up until mid-day on Tuesday.
