New Requirement Proposed For Abortion Docs
AUSTIN (AP) - Texas senators are considering a requirement that doctors who perform abortions have privileges at a nearby hospital.
Galveston Republican Sen. Larry Taylor will present the proposal to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Tuesday. The bill is one of many efforts by conservative lawmakers to reduce the number of abortion performed in Texas.
Taylor wants doctors who perform surgical abortions or who induce abortions with medications to have privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic. Supporters say the measure will ensure the safety of women who undergo the procedure. The measure is supported by anti-abortion groups.
Opponents complain that there are a limited number of doctors who perform abortions and many religious hospitals won't admit those doctors, creating an access problem for women.
