Mystery Infant Deaths no longer a Mystery

What medical examiners used to think was Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is really something else.  Unknown infant deaths were once labeled SIDS but Travis County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Satish Chundru says now the cause for many of those deaths is known.  "More current investigative protocols have revealed that many of these infant deaths are really due to asphyxial deaths or suffocations."  What causes those accidental suffocations are improper bedding and having babies sleep with adults, siblings or pets.  There shouldn't be anything in a crib when a baby goes to sleep except for a tight fitting mattress and sheet.  That means no pillows, stuffed animals, bumpers or blankets.
