IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Right now North Texas FedEx workers have the facility in Irving buzzing with activity. You won't find folks with a case of the "Mondays" coming into work today. The four Mondays before Christmas are the busiest days of the year for FedEx.

Hundreds of workers are up early, processing and sorting packages off 1,000 feet of conveyor belts at a rate of about 12,000 packages an hour and then loading them onto trucks for delivery.

Operations Manager Idalia Matchus explained, "Everybody's gonna be scanning packages. They'll get at least three scans in before they end up getting down to the trucks where they're loaded up."

Thousands of packages could be seen rolling by on conveyor belts and most of them had just been shipped on Sunday. Everything moving down the line just after 5:30 a.m. will be out the door by around 7 a.m.

When putting your packages in the mail keep in mind the quicker you need it to get there, the more expensive it will be.

For delivery by Christmas Day Matchus advised, "Don't procrastinate and make sure you get your packages to the FedEx facility by December 23. For FedEx Ground it's December 15, which is this Friday."

With the amount of online shopping being done these days FedEx is on track to have a record number of deliveries this year. But the allure of home delivery has also caught the attention of criminals, with thieves targeting front porches this time of year.

In addition to having your packages sent to your front door, Matchus said there are other locations you can have them sent. "They have the FedEx Office. Customers can also redirect them to other homes."

It's also never too late for customers to update FedEx on exactly where or how to deliver a package. "Through that mobile app… while the package is on its way they can call in and give special directions and they'll (driver) leave the package where there told to leave it."

There will be modified service for FedEx Express and FedEx SmartPost on Christmas Eve and the company is closed Christmas Day and the day after.
