Massive Fire On Atlanta Interstate Under Control

ATLANTA (CBSDFW.COM) - There was a massive fire on I-85 in Atlanta Thursday evening during rush hour.

A section of the interstate collapsed.

WSB-TV in Atlanta reports witnesses said troopers were telling cars to turn around on the bridge because they were concerned about its integrity.

Minutes later, the bridge collapsed.

Black smoke could been seen for miles.

Traffic was at a standstill on I-85 during rush hour and beyond.

By 6:40 the flames were out as two fire trucks continued to spray foam on the area.  At that point the fire department said the fire was under control.

Investigators do not know what started the fire but they said it was not terrorism.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a State of Emergency for Fulton County after the large fire caused the overpass to collapse.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said its inspectors are looking over the collapse.

GDOT officials said the scene is still too hot for them to inspect and there is no timeline on a fix.

The massive blaze that was burning underneath I-85 NB near Piedmont Road has shut down several roads in northeast Atlanta, WSB reported.

Due to impaired travel, DeKalb County Schools has canceled class for Friday, March 31.
