Man On Trial For DUI Crash That Killed Officer
LANCASTER (CBSDFW.COM) - Testimony is set to begin on Wednesday in the trial of a man who has been accused of driving drunk and killing a Lancaster police officer. It happened in July of last year, when Officer Dustin Dodson had just finished his shift and was leaving on a motorcycle to return home.
Dodson never made it back to his wife and three kids in Cleburne.
On trial is Ricardo Espinosa, charged with intoxication manslaughter in the police officer's death. According to authorities, Espinosa was drunk and behind the wheel at about 6:45 a.m. that morning, when he suddenly turned in front of Dodson's motorcycle and caused a crash along Highway 67.
The 25-year-old police officer suffered a massive head injury and died less than 24 hours later.
According to police, the driver who hit Dodson fled from the scene. But a witness saw the crash and chased down the suspect. That led authorities to Espinosa.
