Man Dies In Hit-&-Run Crash In Fort Worth
Update 2:27 p.m. FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has identified the man killed in a hit and run crash early Thursday morning as Timothy Campbell. His family says he was a counselor and helped dozens of people.
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A hit-and-run driver plowed into a moped in Fort Worth early Thursday morning, killing the rider, who was hit multiple times as his vehicle was dragged down the freeway for more than half of a mile.
Emergency officials were called to the scene at around 2:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the North Freeway, near Long Avenue. They found that moped rider -- who has only been identified as a man in his 50s -- dead at the scene. His vehicle was on the service road close to Papurt Drive.
A witness told police that the moped's hazard lights were flashing. That witness was behind the moped and had moved over to pass it when another vehicle -- possibly a dark-colored Chevrolet Tahoe -- approached at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle hit the back of the moped and dragged it along the roadway.
Police said that the suspect exited the freeway, pulled into the parking lot of a closed business, dislodged the moped from the vehicle, and then fled from the scene. Law enforcement officials are now trying to locate that suspect. No additional information about that individual has been released.
"We do know that there is extensive damage to the front end of that SUV," said Officer Sharron Neal with the Fort Worth Police Department. "So, please, contact us for the family as well as friends of that individual."
The freeway was shut down for several hours as authorities conducted an investigation. The lanes have since been opened again for regular traffic.
