COLLEGE STATION (AP) -House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi steps into potentially hostile territory with an appearance at Texas A&M University.

The California liberal speaks at the George H.W. Bush School of Government, based at a university known for its conservatism.

Her appearance Monday evening is billed as a conversation moderated by the school's dean, Andrew Card. Card was deputy chief of staff during Republican Bush's White House years and was chief of staff when Bush's son was president.

Pelosi's first full House term coincided with the elder Bush's election in 1988. She was in the Democratic leadership during much of his son's presidency, becoming speaker in 2007, and once described the younger Bush as a total failure.

Texas A&M officials say it's not unusual for Bush to invite political adversaries to his school.
