Kenyan Forces Rescue Hostages From Mall Attack
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A Kenyan military assault on the Somali-based, al-Qaida-linked group al-Shabab who were holding hostages at a shopping mall in Nairobi may have broken the standoff.
The military says it has rescued "most" of the hostages and taken control of most of the the upscale Westgate Mall. At least 68 people were killed in Saturday's attack on the mall and more than 150 people were wounded.
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf says U.S. law enforcement, military and civilian personnel in Nairobi are providing advice and assistance to the Kenyan authorities. She says five Americans were among the scores of people injured in the attack by Islamic extremists
Ruhila Adatia-Sood, wife of Ketan Sood, a foreign service national working for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Nairobi was killed, USAID said in a press statement. She was a popular radio and TV personality in Kenya.
