Jury Selection Continues In Josh Brent Case
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Attorneys are still choosing the 12 jurors for the trial of former Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent. He has been accused of driving drunk last year, resulting in a crash that killed his best friend and teammate, Jerry Brown. The initial pool of 120 potential jurors was whittled down to 74 individuals on Thursday.
Those remaining potential jurors are being interviewed on Friday on the sixth floor of the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas.
Nearly two dozen potential jurors were dismissed on Thursday after telling Judge Robert Burns that they would be unable to put aside personal opinions which they had already formed about Brent. That is not a big surprise. Even defense attorneys acknowledged that a lot of people in the DFW area are familiar with this case.
The incident happened in December 2012. Police said that Brent was driving drunk when his car crashed in Irving. His passenger died in the crash. Brown was Brent's good friend and fellow Cowboys teammate. Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Attorneys on both sides of this case explained that they are looking for impartial and fair jurors who will be able to listen to arguments with an open mind. If the jury can be selected by the end of Friday, the trial will begin on Monday.
