DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas Grand Jury will now hear the case against Johnny Manziel.

Dallas police say they have referred a Class A misdemeanor Assault/Domestic Violence case against Manziel to a Dallas County grand jury.

North Texas criminal defense attorney Toby Shook says this shows there probably isn't much evidence against the former Texas A&M quarterback.

"It's a signal to the prosecution that's there's going to be red flags, there's going to be problems with that case. Its also is an ideal way to get rid of the case by avoiding criticism. The police aren't making judgement, the DA's office isn't making any judgements. They're going to let a grand jury pass judgement on it."

The former Heisman Trophy winner was accused of hitting, kidnapping and threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley.

Crowley said he violently grabbed her and struck her repeatedly last month at uptown Dallas' Hotel Za-Za before driving her back to her Fort Worth apartment.

She claims the incident left her with a damaged ear drum.

A judge granted her a protective order against Manziel.
