Jerry Jones: If Reinstated, Cowboys Will Clear Roster Spot For Josh Brent
OXNARD (CBS 11 SPORTS) - On Thursday, former Dallas Cowboy Defensive Tackle Josh Brent will be meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, as he continues to seek reinstatement to the league.
If Brent is granted reinstatement, Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones said the team will clear a roster space for him. It's a message of support that was echoed by former teammates and head coach Jason Garrett when they were asked about it at training camp in Oxnard.
"I know football is a big part of his life. His football family is a big part of his life, and we will be there to help him and support him," said Garrett.
"Everybody deserves a second chance, no matter what you've been through. You deserve a second chance, and when he comes back we will welcome him with open arms," said former teammate Mo Claiborne.
Jason Witten added, "He can help our football team, that's great. But I don't think any of that will be an issue. Everyone will be hugging him, smiling and welcoming him back to our football team."
Brent has not played in the NFL since December 2012. He was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter following his involvement in an automobile accident that killed teammate Jerry Brown. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation.
Brent retired from the NFL last summer before his court case was resolved and before the league had levied any kind of punishment.
