AUSTIN, (AP) — Ted Cruz's campaign has formally filed to put his name on his home state's March 1 presidential primary ballot.

Cruz's wife, Heidi, turned in the necessary paperwork and a $5,000 check at Texas Republican Party headquarters in Austin on Thursday.

She said her husband is building support nationwide, not just focusing on early states like Iowa: "We have a campaign strategy that's built to last." That drew cheers from a small group of supporters waving "Cruz 2016" signs.

Cruz wouldn't say which Republican candidate might by her husband's stiffest competition in Texas, but she insisted the campaign isn't taking anything for granted here, "We're always worried, we're always working hard."

Texas is the largest of a string of states holding Republican primaries on "Super Tuesday" next year.
