Guns On Campus Bill Scheduled For Texas House Vote

AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas House has scheduled a vote this week on a bill allowing concealed handgun license holders to carry their guns into college classrooms.

The bill has been placed on Saturday's House calendar, a significant move on an issue that died without a vote in that chamber two years ago in 2011.

Rep. Dan Flynn, a Van Republican and one of the bill authors, predicts it will pass the House where it has more than 50 co-sponsors.

Flynn says the bill allows universities to opt out of allowing concealed handguns, which has softened opposition among higher education leaders.

Supporters say the bill is a gun rights issue and is needed as a self-defense measure against a campus shooter. Opponents say allowing guns will lead to more campus violence and suicide.
