RICHARDSON (CBS11) – While many teens spent their summers hanging out at the pool, mall or behind a computer screen, a group of Richardson Girl Scouts set out to accomplish a very ambitious service project.
The soon-to-be high schoolers made 100 breastfeeding pillows for new moms at Methodist Richardson Medical Center.
"It makes me feel really good because I personally love helping people out," said Girl Scout Joanna Resendez.
The project was conceived and launched by the teens in attempts to earn their Silver Award, a community service recognition awarded by the Girl Scouts.
"When you think Girls scouts people always think cookies. That's not all what we are about," said 14-year-old Sarah Pruitt.
The pillows are U-shaped and provide comfort for breastfeeding mothers.
On Monday, the girls spent the afternoon handing out the pillows to mothers in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Lauren Haughey said, "I think it's more of just doing good in your community and learning to do it without your parents," said Girl Scout Lauren Haughey.
The scouts say they initially intended to make 50 breastfeeding pillows but ended up making 100 after they mastered the speed in which they were stuffing and sewing them.
All three girls will begin their freshman year at Richardson High School next Monday.
