ARLINGTON (CBS11) - A family that never stopped looking for their missing dogs was reunited with them a little after a year from when they went missing.

Tank and Bowser were found dumped on the side of the road near Ennis. Local animal rescue group, Cody's Friends Rescue, took them in. The dogs were emaciated and covered in scars.

The pets may have had an uncertain future, were it not for that organization and their microchips. The rescue group was able to track down Laurie Lyles, who was stunned as she heard the news.

"We found your dogs," Nancy Stephenson with Cody's Friends Rescue said in a voicemail.

"I do want to warm you that they are not in good shape," the reassuring voice explained.

Because of their condition, the rescue group believes the animals were used as bait dogs for dog fighting.

"They looked like they had not eaten in a year," says Lyles.

It's really heartbreaking," said Alyssa Solley, Lyles' daughter, pointing to Tank's severed ear.

The family still has so many unanswered questions.

"What have they been through? What did they do to them," wondered Lyles.

The dogs won't be able to provide any answers. But and fears the family had about whether the pets may have changed as a result of what they endured, were quickly put to rest.

Tank, the older dog, covered Lyles with kisses almost immediately after coming home.

The two pups have a long road ahead. Bowser is dealing with heartworms. Tank is healing from ear surgery.

Now reunited with their pack, the two couch potatoes don't appear to have a care in the world.
