Roof Collapses In 4-Alarm Fire At North Dallas Condo Complex; 3 Firefighters Injured

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - First-responders were busy Tuesday morning putting out a 4-alarm condo fire in North Dallas.

The call went out as a 2-alarm fire at the Cambridge Park Condominiums, in the 11000 block of Audelia Road, just before 9:30 a.m.  After arriving at the scene it only took about 10 minutes for fire command to requested a third alarm for equipment to fight the flames.

The fire escalated to 4-alarms because a "Mayday" -- firefighter(s) lost/trapped, in danger -- call went out over radios.

The three firefighters in question were found on the second floor of a building after the floor collapsed. Officials said they were "successfully extracted" and all were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One person, who appeared to have on firefighter gear, was loaded into an ambulance and a female tenant on a walker taken away by medics to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Some tenants told CBS 11 News reporter Steve Pickett that they were alerted  about the fire because someone went around banging on doors, warning people to get out.

As of about 10:30 a.m., several buildings of the complex were still fully engulfed.

From Chopper 11, walls and roofs collapsed one-by-one as the fire continued to rage. Black smoke, that could be seen for miles, billowed over the complex as firefighters sprayed water on the inferno.

In all, more than 100 firefighters -- on the ground and on ladders -- were called to the scene to battle the blaze.

Dallas Fire-Rescue said the condominium building, housing 24 units, was destroyed, and according to the American Red Cross, displaced approximately 60 residents.

The damage prevented fire investigators from being able to make entry into the structure, so the cause remains undetermined.
