Families Upset After Cemetery Removes Graveside Statues

WEATHERFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - Crosses, angel statues, and silk flowers spill out of a shed at the East Greenwood cemetery in Weatherford.

"I just went into panic mode," said Autumn Ater.

A mother who lost her son ten years ago, Ater found the statues and a bench, that disappeared from her son's grave, at the back of the shed.

"I feel kind of violated because the items meant something to me," said Ater.

White Funeral Home, which runs the cemetery, says it's begun enforcing guidelines that have been in place for decades banning certain tributes, in an effort to beautify the property.

"It causes an eyesore and a hindrance for us to upkeep the lawns," said owner Anita White.

White said the sudden enforcement of the rules coincides with the opening of a new section of plots now up for sale.  She said the funeral home has tried notifying families, but at least half a dozen who spoke to CBS11 said they never received a letter or phone call.

"I think they really owe us a public apology," said Ater.
