Famed Texas Marine Researcher Ray Dies At 94
GALVESTON (AP) -- Sammy Ray, a founder of Texas A&M University at Galveston whose marine research brought him international acclaim, has died. He was 94.
The university confirmed Monday that Ray died earlier in the day. A cause was not provided.
Ray was a marine biologist who gained broad attention for research on oysters and as a leading authority on Gulf Coast fisheries. His work was seen as vital to sustaining the Gulf Coast fishing industry and he also conducted extensive research on seafood safety.
A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin called him "an extraordinary researcher, teacher and mentor."
Ray held a variety of positions on the Galveston campus, including as interim president. His Sea Camp program became a popular marine adventure for legions of young summer students.
