Election Day: 9 States Voting On Marijuana

UNITED STATES (CBSDFW.COM) - On this election day, nine states will vote on proposals to expand legal access to marijuana.

Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota are asking voters whether to permit medical use of the plant. Additionally, Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada are considering legalizing and taxing recreational marijuana.

Collectively, the ballot measures amount to the closest the U.S. has come to a national referendum on the drug.

Weed is still illegal under federal law, but remains one of the most popular recreational drugs in the country.

Texas prohibits both medicinal and recreational marijuana use.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has said he won't legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational use for as long as he's in office.

It's difficult to predict when legalization might receive support in Congress or surge to approval in a majority of states.

Starting tonight at 6 p.m. CBS 11 News Political Reporter Jack Fink will be online on CBSDFW.COM and on Facebook Live with election results. Republican Allen West and Democrat Domingo Garcia will share their insight along with the panel. We'll also be taking your questions -- so join in on the conversation!
