DFW Volunteers Prepare Meals For Needy

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Salvation Army and a group of DFW volunteers have been preparing a Thanksgiving feast for those in need. They plan to serve 1,800 people on Thursday at The Salvation Army's headquarters in Dallas. And, as in the past, they have had to turn down some volunteers.

There are 120 people donating their time on Thanksgiving Day, and they signed up for the job six months ago.

This entire ordeal is a massive undertaking for those volunteers. There are 260 turkeys that have been prepared. The meal also includes stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and rolls -- all of the fixings. Work actually began last week.

Those volunteers helping out The Salvation Army with the Thanksgiving lunch said that serving members of the community is a special part of each holiday. "It is special, because some of the people, probably, they don't have nothing to eat," said chef Modesto Robledo on Thursday morning. "They come and enjoy here, and some of the people come and have fun."

"I invite everybody, come here and enjoy the meal we are going to prepare with our heart," added Robledo.

The next big meal that The Salvation Army will provide for the Dallas community comes on Christmas. Those volunteer positions have already been taken as well. "Tomorrow, the slots will be filled for next year for Thanksgiving Day," said Maj. Ward Matthews with The Salvation Army. "We are going to need folks all year long though, so you can still have that sense of holiday here by volunteering to help us feed and take care of the homeless."
