SAGINAW (CBSNewsTexas.com) — Police are investigating after a woman was found fatally shot inside her Saginaw home last week.

At approximately 10 p.m. July 24, police were sent to a residence in the 200 block of Lottie Lane in reference to a female with a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When officers arrived, they found a 46-year-old woman lying on a bed with a single shot to her upper chest. She was later identified as Kimberly Knapp, a prominent criminal defense attorney with a practice in Fort Worth.

Knapp was rushed to John Peter Smith Hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Thirty-two-year-old Rance Ray Magby was the only other occupant of the residence and is believed to be responsible for Knapp's death. He was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held on a murder charge.

Her firm, Knapp Begley Law, released the following statement Friday morning:

We are devastated to announce the tragic loss of our senior partner, Kimberly Knapp, both personally and professionally. Kim was a friend as well as a colleague. Moreover, she was a wonderful person and a fantastic attorney and teacher. The firm will continue to fight to defend people's rights, as she would have wanted.

A motive for the killing is publicly unknown at this time and this remains an ongoing investigation.
