FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A former president, a country music superstar and Dallas Cowboys players teamed on Monday morning for a big kickoff in North Texas. Former President Jimmy Carter began his Carter Work Project in both Dallas and Fort Worth on Monday. This marks the first time in 30 years that the annual project has taken place in the Metroplex.

In past years, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have chosen different locations all around the world, helping people build their first homes. This year, the 39th President started building with volunteers in the Central Meadowbrook neighborhood.

And this comes just five days after Carter turned 90 years old.

Two other big names are in North Texas for the event as well. Married country music superstars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood began working alongside the future homeowners who are building their own houses.

"This is a big event to me because we are building my house," said Elizabeth Mburra. "I'm very excited and I thank God, because it's a big thing and I had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Carter and I have an opportunity to own my own house."

The Carters will be assisting in Fort Worth on Monday and Tuesday, then heading over to the east Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas on Wednesday. They wrap up their work in the Metroplex on Saturday.

When the weekend comes, more than 5,000 volunteers from around the nation will have helped build and repair more than 100 homes across the DFW area.
