GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - A young boy was critically injured following a boat crash on Joe Pool Lake.

Chase Edwards, 12, was on board a boat that was struck by another one.

Grand Prairie police said two boats were tied together about 200 yards off the shore when a third boat hit them around 11 p.m. Saturday night. It happened near Lynn Creek Park.

People on board one of the idle boats told CBS 11 they saw the boat approaching them at a high rate of speed before it slammed into them.

Johnny Hearn said, "It was like an explosion."

Thirteen people suffered minor injuries but didn't have to go to the hospital.

Edwards was immediately taken to the shore, and then transported by an air ambulance to Children's Medical Center.  He underwent surgery Sunday and was still in critical but stable condition.

Police said alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the collision, and both boats did have their lights on.

As of Sunday evening, the Grand Prairie Police Department had no plans to charge anyone in the crash.

"We don't know if someone is at fault or not," said Det. Lyle Gensler. "We like to think not.  Boats out on the water don't abide by the same rules as cars. It's basically an uncontrolled intersection out there in the middle of the water. "
