BASTROP (CBSDFW.COM) - It's been seven months since wildfires claimed 34,000 acres of forest and grasslands, 1,670 homes and two lives in and around the central Texas community of Bastrop.

Now, recovering survivors are watching as fire season begins again.

Driving for mile after mile through blackened spires residents talk about the lingering scar on the land and how it cannot stop the rebuilding of their homes and precious woodlands from the fast moving September 2011 fires.

Park rangers say the woods are coming to life again.

New roofs on 1930s era Bastrop State park structures reflect the rebuilding efforts. Some park structures, still roofless line the recently paved roads of the park.

Little wildlife fills the void between sparse undergrowth.  Deer and other mammals are slower to return, but spring brings many of the grazing and browsing animals into the wide open landscape.

"Fire remakes the forest and us," reported one visitor to the park.

With thousands of miles of Texas recovering from 2011's fires, Bastrop is in the heart of the cleanup.
