NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Donald Trump has won the 2016 presidential election. Trump won Wisconsin which put him over the 270 electoral votes threshold to 276.
The now President-elect Donald Trump is telling the American people that "I promise you I will not let you down."
Trump, addressing supporters at his victory party in New York City early Wednesday, says he looks "very much forward to being your president."
He tells his supporters he hopes to make them "very proud" for choosing him to be the nation's 45th president.
And the celebrity businessman vows to "get to work immediately for the American people" and says his "movement" was just beginning.
Trump is also trying to reassure jittery U.S. allies. He ran on a platform of pulling back from historic treaties like NATO. But in his victory speech Wednesday morning Trump is trying to reassure foreign countries.
He says, "I want to tell the world that, while we will always put America's interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone."
Trump said Hillary Clinton called to concede the election and congratulate him and his supporters.
"Hillary has worked very hard.. and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country," said Trump to his supporters at his election night headquarters in New York City.
"We will have the strongest economy of anywhere in the world. At the same time, we will get along with all other nations," said Trump.
The president-elect asked that the nation to come together, and promised to "represent every citizen of our land."
He added that it was "time for America to bind the wounds of division" and "time for us to come together as one."
Trump said "America will no longer settle for anything but the best" and said that the nation will "dream big and bold and daring."
Trump's agenda figures to carry high stakes for Texas. Governor Greg Abbott says he's looking forward to working with the billionaire. Trump has promised to build a wall along the entire U.S.-Mexico border and ramp up deportation of immigrants in the country illegally.
Ted Cruz, who finished second to the billionaire businessman in a bitter Republican presidential primary, said in a statement early Wednesday that he looks "forward to working with the new administration to confirm conservative justices" for the U.S. Supreme Court. John Cornyn said in a statement, that "Texans and all Americans are understandably concerned for our country."
Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick in his own statement called Trump's win "a great night for our country and a great night for Texas." Patrick initially supported Ted Cruz's presidential bid, but quickly embraced Trump when the Texas senator dropped out. He eventually became Trump's Texas state chairman.
Patrick added, "Texans will now have a good friend in the White House who will be our partner in securing the border."
Rival Mark Cuban congratulated Trump as well.
