ALS Patient From North Texas Takes Ice Bucket Challenge
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - By now you've probably seen the videos of athlete, movie stars, state and local leaders, and just plain folk dumping buckets of ice cold water over their heads.
The Ice Bucket Challenge is a fundraising and awareness effort for ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. The challenge is a "pay it forward" kind of activity with people post videos on Facebook, Instagram or other social media sites, showing them dumping the cold water on themselves. Participants then challenge specific people to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS.
Perhaps the most memorable Ice Bucket Challenge was posted be a Rockwall native, who now lives in Connecticut, who has been an ALS patient for 12 years.
In his video Kurt McClain said, "Since I am from Texas I have chosen to use ice cubes in the shape of the state of Texas. Now sit back and enjoy the show."
McClain can't move and a machine does his speaking for him, but he says he maintains a positive attitude.
The native Texan is now challenging everyone who sees his ice bucket video to take the challenge and donate whatever they can to the ALS Association.
As it stands some 30,000 Americans suffer from the disease that attacks nerve cells and ultimately leads to total paralysis.
