Afghanistan Diary: Day Four At Bagram Air Field
CBS 11 anchor Keith Garvin and photojournalist Edgar Solis are traveling to Afghanistan to see the U.S. war effort firsthand. In February they will bring back a series of stories about our troops there. While they are traveling, Keith is writing this blog for CBSDFW.COM.
Saturday, January 21:
BAGRAM AIR FIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – What a busy and eventful day! Edgar and I got around Bagram Air Field quite a bit today, shooting a lot of video and conducting several interviews. The highlight of the day was sitting down & interviewing the 1st Cavalry Division's commander, Major General Dan Allyn.
General Allyn is extremely proud of the men & women of the 1st Cav. He also believes when the division turns over control of eastern Afghanistan to the 1st Infantry Division in a few months, it will be handing over a much-improved Afghanistan.
In February you'll hear more from General Allyn, including the imprint he hopes the 1st Cav leaves on the people of Afghanistan.
We also got the chance to interview Specialist Matthew Gossard, a native of Crowley. He is one of dozens of North Texans proudly serving in the 1st Cavalry Division.
Specialist Gossard has a classified job that is so secretive we couldn't film him doing it. But we did hear how much he loves his job and how this 25 year old North Texan is playing a critical role in the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
We wouldn't be able to conduct these interviews and get the video we need if it wasn't for the soldiers in the Cav's public affairs office.
They're working extremely hard to help set up all of our interviews & drive us around this sprawling base. The one thing they can't help us with is the weather! It's still extremely cold & they're predicting 1-3 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.
Because of the state of Afghanistan's infrastructure, bad weather would hurt our ability to travel by air & by road. That would slow down our efforts to get more stories but we'll remain hopeful.
Back at it tomorrow!
